Compaq Information

Established in 1982, Compaq was one of the largest manufactures of computers, personal and industrial printers, and consumer electronics through the 1980s and 1990s. As an industry leader, Compaq remained an independent corporation until the company was bought-out in 2001 by computer giant Hewlett Packard for a price of $25 billion. With an extensive portfolio of desktop computers, laptops, severs and printing systems, HP continues to distributes many products, including computers, printers, fax machines and photocopiers, under the respected Compaq brand-name.

Compaq was founded in the early 1980s by thee managers from Texas Instruments who each contributed $1,000 to get their business off the ground. Originally sketched on a placemat, the Portable PC by Compaq was a forerunner to today's laptop, then known as a suitcase computer. First released in 1983 with a retail price of approximately $3,000, the Portable PC was by far the most affordable computer available to the home users at the time. Within the first year, Compaq sold more than 53,000 units, with sales totaling $111 million. By the late 1980s, Compaq was at the forefront of the computer market, becoming the first manufacturer with revenue over $1 billion.

In the 1980s, Compaq was one of the first companies to challenge IBM's monopoly on PCs by producing a compatible system using technology licensed from Microsoft. In fact, the name Compaq is a blended word for compatibility and quality. The company also produced some of the first compact, mini-tower PCs, as well as the first computers under $1,000 in the 1990s. With three-year warranties and around-the-clock tech support for all of their models, including the popular Prolinea and Presario series, Compaq held a strong position as one of the five largest computer manufacturers in the mid 1990s.

Since 1992, when the original Pagemarq printer was released, Compaq has manufactured a full range of personal and industrial printing systems, including inkjet printers, laser photocopiers and fax machines. With everything from simple DeskJet printers, which are now distributed by HP, to industrial dot-matrix printers capable of completing large-format jobs, the computer manufacturer Compaq is also known for their popular printers for professionals and home users. From thermal inkjet printers to wireless laserjets, Compaq specializes in producing high-quality printers for a variety of common applications.

With a full range of printers, copiers and fax machines, Compaq also distributes a number of inkjet cartridges and toner cartridges for laser copiers and printers. Today, consumers do not have to buy ink or toner from original equipment manufacturers. Using ink refill kits and remanufactured cartridges, consumers can go green and save money, and you can save even more money by buying your printer products here.
