An inkjet printer is composed of several components that work together to get the job done. The most important part of the printer is known as the print head and is equipped with the ink spraying nozzles that make text and images come to life. The print head moves back and forth across a belt which is mounted on a rolling bar. Connected to the print head are the printer ink cartridges, the most expensive components of inkjet printers. Ink cartridges are quite pricey and need to be replaced frequently. The power source for inkjet printers is normally built around a circuit board which is plugged into a normal wall outlet like most electrical devices.

The first step to printing is loading paper into the paper feed tray, which guides the paper into the printer using a system of trays and rollers. The quality of paper used is often overlooked by consumers and can lead to smeared ink, spotted print jobs and even printer malfunctions. When selecting your paper, it is important to not forfeit quality for a cheaper price. It is imperative that you buy paper with the recommended thickness given by the printer manufacturer. Cheap paper is often dusty and can cause the printing cartridge to become jammed and ink to smear on the accumulated dusk. If paper is too thin, the paper will remain wet after the print job is completed and will also smear as the paper continues to stack up.
