Popular Printer Ink Products For Office Use

2011-10-17

These days, running a successful office requires having a good printer. Printers are needed for printing forms, reports, spreadsheets and all kinds of other documents. Unfortunately, buying a printer is not the end-all in printing. Employees also need to keep printers stocked with printer ink cartridges and other products. Over time, a person may end up spending more on printer ink products than on the actual printer. The following are a few of the most essential printer ink products to keep stocked in the office:

Printer Toner

Made from a specially formulated polymer, toner is used in laser printers and photocopiers to create text. Most offices stick with black printer toner, but the product also comes in magenta, yellow and cyan. The best brands of toner are marked by their longevity and sharp text.

Printer Ink Cartridges

Inkjet cartridges serve a similar function to printer toner, but they are used in different types of printers. Unlike toner, inkjet cartridges are used in inkjet printers. They contain the printer head and plenty of ink. Some manufacturers accompany the ink reservoirs with computer chips capable of communicating with the printer. The most common type of ink printer cartridge is the thermal cartridge. In a thermal cartridge, a small metal resistor is added so that when the printer provides a current, the resistor will grow warm and heat up the ink. This process forces a small droplet of ink out of the nozzle of the printer cartridge.

Printer Ribbons

At one point in time, most printers used ribbons instead of the modern ink cartridge. Today, printer ribbons aren't used as often, but they are still available in most computer stores. Printer ribbons are used in dot matrix printers. This type of printer has a special print head that moves back and forth. The movement mimics that of a typewriter. Small metal rods produce the dots of the dot matrix. Although the text produced on printer ribbons is not as refined or as sophisticated as the modern laser printer, there are still advantages to using dot matrix printers. The main advantage is that they are highly durable and can last a whole lot longer than inkjet and laser printers.

Maintenance Kits

With constant use, it doesn't take long before a printer jams up or needs a few repairs. The life of a printer can be greatly extended with the help of a printer maintenance kit. Typically used in laser printers, maintenance kits can be easily installed by the user. Each maintenance kit contains the printer parts that the manufacturers feel are most likely to need replacement at some point in time. They are made to increase productivity and decrease downtime.
