Established in 1884, ABDick is one of the oldest printing companies specializing in document duplication systems, printer ink and laser toner cartridges. The ABDick name is synonymous with the Mimeograph machine, a term trademarked by ABDick in 1904 for document duplication technology licensed from Thomas Edison. In the early 20th century, Mimeograph was a household brand name that became generalized like the term Xerox. As a corporate leader of the printing industry, ABDick was always at the forefront of advancing technology developing the first photocopier, followed by minicomputers and a variety of IT equipment and accessories.
Chicago-based ABDick was founded by Albert Blake Dick, who is also the company's namesake. By the turn of the century, ABDick was the largest supplier of ink and printing materials. The original ABDick 75 Rotary Mimeograph was designed to produce 50 duplicated documents per minute using a perforated stencil blank that could be marked with a stylus. In the first half of the 20th century, ABDick's Mimeograph system was the most convenient solution for short-run printing jobs required for schools, offices and small organizations. Keeping up with advances in technology, ABDick produced the first commercial photocopy machine in 1957.
With an increasing market for affordable desktop printing solutions, ABDick entered the personal printer sector releasing a Tabletop Offset Printer in 1959, followed by VideoJet and inkjet technology used for printing barcodes. Specializing in high-tech ink and digital printers, ABDick was the first company to develope toner compatible with Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) systems used on checks. Supplying the banking and financial sector as well as printing companies worldwide, ABDick has consistently held a leading position in the market for laser and inkjet printers, cartridges and toner. In the 1980s, ABDick took a business detour entering the market for industrial computers. Teaming up with British IT company GEC, ABDick helped develop the 32-bit GEC Series 64 minicomputer, which sold 22 workstation units during its brief existence.
In the late 1980s and early 1990, ABDick expanded its digital printing holdings by acquiring Itek Graphix, one of the leading manufacturers of digital printing plates. In 2004, ABDick filed for bankruptcy, and most of its assets were sold to Presstek, a manufacturer of digital offset presses and advanced computer-to-plate systems. Presstek continues to distribute ABDick printers and replacement cartridges for the full line of laser and inkjet printers, fax machines and photocopiers.
